Diversity
The New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board's enabling legislation states that board members "shall reflect the diversity of the city's population," and the agency's recruitment and hiring practices embody this commitment to diversity. The CCRB prides itself on the varied backgrounds of its staff.
The CCRB regularly recruits from the City University of New York as well as other colleges and universities in order to attract investigators who represent the many communities of New York City. The agency puts a premium on hiring investigators fluent in languages other than English, so civilians can speak directly to investigators in the languages in which they can best communicate. In January 2008, the CCRB strengthened its outreach to job candidates by hiring a full-time Director of Recruitment, who has enhanced the agency’s recruiting partnerships with colleges, student-affinity groups and diversity-oriented non-profit associations.
These efforts are reflected in the diversity of the agency's staff. As of July 31, 2010, 36% of the investigators at the CCRB were black, Hispanic, or Asian, including 41% of the Investigations Division's supervisory staff. The agency's executive and managerial staff is 49% black or Hispanic or Asian. Additionally, the agency gender breakdown is male 45% and female 55%. The agency is proud not only of its success in maintaining a diverse workplace, but of the success people of many backgrounds have had in their careers at the CCRB.
