To help New Yorkers navigate through tough economic times, the City of New York and CEO's Office of Financial Empowerment, in partnership with the City University of New York (CUNY) and the Daily News, assembled a team of experts to offer free financial help to New Yorkers through a special, one week phone-a-thon held in December.

Mayor Bloomberg with MillionTrees Training Program Participants
Mayor Bloomberg and Bette Midler planted tree 111,111 at the one year anniversary of MillionTreesNYC, a ten-year initiative to plant and care for one million new trees throughout the five boroughs. The MillionTreesNYC anniversary was celebrated by the launch of several community-based programs and events, including the CEO’s MillionTrees Training Program, conducted in partnership with New York Restoration Project (NYRP) and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation.

Mayor Bloomberg Highlights Free and Low-Cost Holiday Events
Inspired by New York City’s Just Ask the Locals campaign, Mayor Bloomberg recently outlined dozens of ongoing free and low-cost, family-friendly cultural activities. New York City’s museums, parks, theaters, public libraries, recreation centers, Business Improvement Districts, and other venues offer many attractions, including special holiday events, with a free or suggested admission cost.

CEO Releases Report on Alternative to the Federal Poverty Measure
This working paper explains how the CEO measure, which is based on recommendations made by the National Academy of Sciences, was constructed. The paper also discusses the new measure’s impact on New York City's poverty rate. New York City is the first local government in the nation to reformulate the widely criticized 40-year old poverty measure. Federal legislation proposing changes to the official measure were subsequently introduced by Rep. McDermott (D-WA) and Sen. Dodd (D-CT).

Mayor Bloomberg Announces the Successful Launch of 31 New Center for Economic Opportunity Anti-Poverty Programs During its First Year
On December 27, Mayor Bloomberg announced that the Center for Economic Opportunity successfully implemented 31 new anti-poverty programs since being created in 2006. In addition, CEO released its first Strategy and Implementation Report, which provides an overview of strategy and details each new program. Mayor Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor Gibbs, and Executive Director Veronica White were joined at the announcement by participants of DYCD's Young Adult Internship Program, one of CEO’s newly launched initiatives.
