2007 NYC Cycling Map
Overview | Citywide Cycling Map | About the Map

Overview:
The New York City Cycling Map shows existing bicycle lanes, existing and planned greenways, and a network of recommended on-street routes. The existing and planned routes are the result of extensive fieldwork involving analysis of traffic conditions and assessment of the connectivity, accessibility, and safety of the network, as well as meetings that sought community input.

Maps undergo changes and enhancements each year. So your comments are always welcome (call 311). For example the 2005 edition featured the citywide bicycle network on one map, which replaced five maps covering the whole city.

Popularity of the maps grows with each edition. In fact, more than 1,000,000 maps will have been printed and distributed since its first edition in 1997. The number of maps printed and distributed since 1997 is as follows:

  • 25,000 maps in 1997;
  • 35,000 maps in 1998;
  • 40,000 maps in 1999;
  • 70,000 maps in 2001;
  • 100,000 maps in 2002;
  • 132,000 maps in 2003;
  • 176,000 maps in 2004;
  • 200,000 maps in 2005;
  • 200,000 maps in 2006;
  • 200,000 maps in 2007; and
  • 220,000 maps in 2008

About the Maps:
The New York Cycling Map was designed by in-agency Bicycle Program staff at the NYC Department of City Planning and the Department of Transportation:

  • To encourage more people to bicycle by promoting bicycle-friendly streets and parks,
  • To educate cyclists of their rights and responsibilities as roadway and park users, and
  • To recognize bicycles as a legitimate mode of transportation.
The New York Cycling Map is intended for commuter and recreational cyclists.

The Bronx and Staten Island editions of the cycling map were first released in 1997; in 1998, maps for all five boroughs were produced. These maps were distributed to the cycling public, advocacy groups and bicycle shops, as well as governmental agencies, and elected and appointed officials.

Cycling maps are available for free at the NYC Department of City Planning bookstore at 22 Reade Street, NY, NY, 10007, in bicycle shops, libraries, and schools. They can also be obtained by calling the New York City Call Center at 311.
