Interns

Photos

Since 1997, DEP has engaged summer interns from Ulster County Community College (UCCC) to perform field research. Under the direct supervision of DEP staff and other professionals, the interns get hands-on experience in fluvial geomorphic surveys, fish sampling, aquatic habitat assessments and various other stream management research projects. For the 2003 summer season, DEP has hired six student interns and a field program coordinator.

AmeriCorps

For the past three years, the Stream Management Program has partnered with the Poughkeepsie-based Youth Resource Development Corporation and the Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to employ 12 federal AmeriCorps members at three SWCD offices and the DEP. Three more members will join the program during 2003-2004. AmeriCorps members become integral staff to each Stream Management Planning Project Team. They receive specialized training and represent their host agencies at conferences and workshops. Americorps staff help with all field and office work needed to develop of Stream Management Plans, including historical research, coordinating and attending public meetings, and collecting, compiling and analyzing field data.
