Public Access Areas Beginning in the fall of 2008, the City has newly designated recreation areas called Public Access Areas or PAAs. Recreational use including hunting, fishing, hiking, and trapping can now occur on City land without the need for a DEP Access Permit, Hunting Tag, or Vehicle Mirror Hanger. The Public Access Area designation was included in the 2008 revision to the DEP Rules for the Recreational Use of Water Supply Lands and Waters. This was done as an effort to provide easier recreational access and expanded use of City property consistent with water supply protection. In addition, this may help local communities utilize City lands in their overall tourism strategies. While the majority of PAAs are those City lands adjacent to NYSDEC lands, DEP has expanded this designation to selected “non-adjacent” lands. PAAs are only located in the west of Hudson NYC watershed at this time.
These lands are considered multiple-use, that is, many recreational enthusiasts may be using the property at the same time. For example, hikers should be aware that hunters are using this property in the fall and spring turkey season and should wear orange clothing. Trappers should use extreme caution in locating and selecting their traps so as to not catch non-target animals. We are confident our recreational users can coexist on these lands with a minimum amount of conflicts and as always, respect each other and this important water supply resource.
