FAQ

Q. I am a senior and it’s getting very hard for me to perform household tasks such as preparing meals. How can I get help with personal care or meals delivered to my home?

Answer: The Department for the Aging contracts with Case Management Agencies that provide access to home-delivered meals, home care attendants, chore services, and other in-home supportive services. To locate the Case Management Agency or Senior Center in your area, please use our online service locator on top of this page.

Q. My income is very limited. Where can I find affordable housing?

Answer: The Department for the Aging provides a comprehensive online listing of senior housing operating within the five boroughs. The information can be viewed by borough or by entering a zip code - See listings. Since affordable senior housing can have waiting lists, the Department has also partnered with other City agencies to develop the online New York City Affordable Housing Resource Center, where you can find information on all aspects of City housing, including renting an apartment, buying a home, and apartment maintenance issues. Through this site, you will also find all of the City's affordable housing lottery listings.  For more information, please call 311.

Q. I can’t afford my heating or electric bill. Are there any programs that can help me?

Answer: The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) assists low-income households with their fuel and /or utility costs. Emergency assistance is also available to HEAP-eligible households that pay directly for heat and are faced with "shut-off" notices. The Department for the Aging also administers the Weatherization, Referral and Packaging Program (WRAP) which provides low-income senior homeowners with free home energy-related services that can lower energy bills and increase the comfort of their homes.  For more information or to apply, please call 311. Learn more...

Q. I received letters from different health insurance companies asking me to enroll in their new "Medicare Part D" prescription drug plan. Which plan should I sign up for?

Answer: The Department for the Aging’s Health Insurance Information Counseling Assistance Program (HIICAP) is New York's source for free, current and impartial information about health care coverage. Through our helpline and our volunteer counselors we can provide you with information on all aspects of health insurance. If you have questions about Medicare Part D, our 38 walk-in centers are here to help. Learn more or call 311.
