Big Apple Senior Strollers

Walking is an easy and fun way to stay fit, especially when you walk with friends. The Big Apple Senior Strollers walking clubs offer a great opportunity to enjoy the benefits of walking, as well as the company of friends.

These walking clubs are active in a variety of facilities that provide services to seniors throughout New York City. Each club walks to achieve a target number of steps, anywhere from 25, 000 to 100,000.  Every Big Apple Senior Stroller can help their club meet its target and improve his or her physical fitness by gradually increasing the number of steps that they take whenever their club is out walking.  Each member of a club uses a pedometer to count their steps and their individual totals contribute to their club’s goal.

To find a Walking Club near you, select your borough to see a roster of walking clubs in your neighborhood. You must be a member of a senior center before you can join its club. Please check with your doctor before joining a club.

To participate in 2009, all clubs, whether current or new, must complete and return the Big Apple Senior Strollers Registration Form. Once your group is registered, you'll receive a Big Apple Senior Strollers kit in the mail.

As part of the ceremonies that took place at Senior Stroll 2008, presentations were made to four senior centers. Each of the four had accumulated the most steps in one of four categories.

  • Finally, a new category, the Wild Card, was added on 2008. CWA Local 1180-Retiree Division qualified for this category by coming closest to 50,000 steps without going over. Their total was 49,731 steps.
