Modernization SC

Modernizing Senior Centers
The Department oversees more than 300 senior centers citywide. Currently, only two percent of the City's 1.3 million seniors actually attend a senior center on a given day. The Department's modernization of senior services will aim to adopt a more comprehensive health and wellness approach to senior centers in an effort to engage a greater percentage and age-range of the senior population.

On December 19, 2008 the RFP for Congregate Programs for Older Adults was withdrawn. With the appointment of Commissioner Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, a new collaborative, community-driven senior center modernization process will begin.

NY State Office for the Aging Report on Good Health Practices
The New York State Office for the Aging (SOFA) released in July 2008 a report summarizing the use of evidence-based practices and innovative programs used by Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) to improve the health of seniors and how these programs can be replicated in other communities.
