City challenges more New Yorkers than ever before to help with annual count. Department of Homeless Services (DHS) Commissioner Robert V. Hess today announced that the eighth annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE 2010), a survey of individuals living on New York City streets, parks and other public spaces, will be held on the night of Monday, January 25, 2010.

A Second Progress Report on A New Way Home for Veterans Experiencing Homelessness in New York City.

DHS has released an update on the work of the Operation Home Task Force. In December 2006, Mayor Bloomberg and then-Veterans Affairs Secretary James Nicholson created the Operation Home Task Force, a joint effort between DHS and the VA charged with ending the need for any veteran to sleep on the City’s streets or in shelters.

Miss Florida 2009, Rachael Todd, has selected homelessness to be her platform during her year of serving in the title. She met on October 7 with DHS Commissioner Robert V. Hess to discuss the agency’s programs and services.  Ms. Todd previously met with DHS officials at the National Conference on Ending Homelessness in Washington D.C., where she served as a delegate.

Commissioner Hess speaks with attendees of an August 21 press conference, announcing the donation of 800 school uniform vouchers to families with children in shelter. Council Members Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Inez Dickens, Darlene Mealy and Maria Baez were on hand to represent the districts receiving the vouchers, which were donated by Youngland and Kid City Stores.


 

DHS has instituted the Client Rights and Responsibilities policy in its families with children shelter system.

DHS has instituted the Client Rights and Responsibilities policy in its families with children shelter system. The policy creates a partnership among clients, DHS and providers to help families exit shelter and return to permanent housing in the community.

DHS and St. John's University announced on June 11, 2009, a partnership to offer homeless individuals the opportunity to receive college degrees. The Advantage Academy also provides housing and social services to more than 40 homeless and formerly homeless individuals. DHS held its annual Medal Day Ceremony for its Peace Officers on May 21, 2009.  Many officers were recognized for their service, including the Officer of the Year and Supervisor of the Year, and numerous promotions were announced as well.  Pictured are more than 50 Peace Officers with Commissioner Robert V. Children at the Jackson Avenue Family Residence in the Bronx decorate a gingerbread house on May 4, 2009. Dozens of children at the facility, which is run by DHS provider Citizens Advice Bureau, had the opportunity to cover gingerbread houses with frosting and candy – and of course got to sample the treats as well – thanks to Trish Karter, the owner of a baking company in Massachusetts. Trish was riding her bicycle up the east coast to raise awareness of family homelessness.

Seventh Annual Metro Moms Week Banquet - DHS Commissioner Robert V. Hess greets the families gathered at the Seventh Annual Metro Moms Week Banquet at the New York City Rescue Mission, in honor of Mother’s Day on May 9, 2009. Nearly 500 homeless mothers and children living in City shelters enjoyed the event, which included entertainment and a gourmet meal.

DHS Commissioner Hess Thanks St. John's University for Participating in HOPE 2009
DHS Commissioner Robert V. Hess took center court with students and administrators from St. John’s University during a timeout from their basketball game against Georgetown on March 3 at Madison Square Garden. The Commissioner thanked the nearly 70 members of the school community who participated in the 2009 HOPE Survey.
