Disclaimer: The Department of Buildings provides this Web version of the Building Code for reference and informational purposes only. The print version of the Building Code, together with any Local Laws (amendments) adopted by the City Council subsequent to the most recent update to the print version, remains the official version. For those discrepancies that exist between the print and Web versions of the Building Code, the print version, together with any City Council amendments, shall be considered correct. This web version may also include amendments that are not yet on the printed version.

About the Building Code on the Web
The current Building Code was enacted by the City Council on October 22, 1968, and approved by the Mayor on November 6, 1968. It became effective on December 6, 1968, superseding the Building Code enacted in 1938. The "New Code" is based largely upon nationally accepted performance standards and specifications for materials and construction assemblies. The present edition available here updates the Building Code to October 1, 2004. Local Laws may have been adopted by the City Council which have amended this code and therefore are not included in this version.

The Department of Buildings is making the Building Code available on the Web without a fee for resource and reference purposes only.

How to Access the Building Code on the Web
You must download Adobe® Acrobat® Reader to view the Building Code files. This is a free software package and this link has instructions on downloading the latest version. This latest version provides an easier interface for saving PDF files to your local drives and for cutting and pasting text and graphics from the Building Code PDF files for use in other applications. Once you have completed the download and installed the software, you may start by accessing the files in the table below. If you are already familiar with the Building Code and know the subchapter or section you are interested in, review the table below and click on the desired file. Each of the subchapters or files in the table has bookmarks for all the other Building Code subchapters so there is no need to download the Table of Contents.

If you don't know the specific section and would like a quick overview of the Building Code we suggest that you access the first file in the table below, entitled, "Title Page, Preface and Table of Contents". This file lists all of the Subchapters and their Articles. In this file the subchapters are highlighted in blue and will link to the various PDF files. There is no need to review the Table of Contents a second time since the bookmarks on each PDF file contain the complete index.

Hints and Suggestions
Since some of the PDF files are large and may take longer to download we suggest that you review their size either in the table below or on the Table of Contents before you download them.

If you review the Building Code often you may wish to save each of these files on your local hard-drive by clicking your right mouse button over the desired file in the table below. Highlight the "Save Target As" section and save the files using the same name. Every PDF file must have the same name as in the Table below and be located in the same sub-directory for the bookmarks to work properly.

Each PDF Sub-directory file has been bookmarked with the various Articles that are contained within. If you would like to go to the Article click that area in the bookmark.

Since bookmarks are used extensively throughout, we suggest that you use Bookmarks to nagvigate. We also suggest that if you have trouble viewing this file you experiment with the different View options: Fit in Window (CTRL + 0), Actual Size (CTRL+1), Fit Width (CTRL + 2), Fit Size (CTRL+3).
