Make Healthier Choices: Your Heart and Your Waistline Will Thank you
Recent studies conducted by the Brooklyn District Public Health Office
and the Harlem District Public Health Office
show a correlation between a lack of access to healthy foods and health risks, including obesity. Both studies found that small grocery stores (bodegas) are the most common food retailers serving community residents, yet most do not offer a variety of affordable nutritious foods such as low-fat milk, whole grains, or fresh/frozen produce. Many bodegas also heavily market unhealthy products such as cigarettes, alcohol and soda through prominent advertising and displays.
The PAN program is partnering with local bodega owners to expand the availability of healthier food choices in target neighborhoods (Harlem, South Bronx, and Central Brooklyn) with the highest rates of obesity and diabetes in the city.
Moooove to 1% Milk
The Physical Activity and Nutrition Program encourages families to "MOOOOVE" to 1% milk for everyone age 2 and up. Low fat (1%) milk has all the nutrition of whole milk, with 50 less calories and a third of the fat and saturated fat of whole milk. Cutting down on unnecessary calories and saturated fat can prevent diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems. Does your local bodega, corner or grocery store carry 1% milk? If not, please use our "I Buy 1% milk" postcards below to request it. Make the switch to 1% milk.
