Citywide IT Services: Citywide Radio Network

The Citywide Radio Network (CRN) supports mission critical and interoperable land-mobile radio communications throughout the five boroughs. This enterprise-level, City-owned communications system serves specific communications needs of the City's public safety and essential public service agencies through a reliable, resilient, and secure land-mobile radio network. The CRN system is designed to be available 24-7 during normal operating scenarios and in emergencies.

How CRN Works
The CRN is capable of both analog and digital communications. Its design employs state-of-the-art simulcast technologies to significantly enhance radio coverage within the five boroughs, as well as unprecedented coverage into the waterways surrounding the City. The recent Channel 16 radio network was built and accepted late in 2009 and began agency subscriber migration in 2010.

Who CRN Serves

More than 25,000 radios serving 40 agencies are already carried by the network. After migrating to the CRN, agencies have begun decommissioning legacy radio systems - translating into real savings associated with landlines, site leases and maintenance contracts, which are in the process of being cancelled. Agencies have also started to realize the benefits of a consolidated enterprise?level infrastructure, including enhanced coverage, capacity and mission critical interoperability.

Agencies on the CRN include:

  • Fire Department and the Emergency Medical Service
  • Department of Correction
  • Department of Transportation
  • Department of Sanitation
  • Department of Parks and Recreation
  • the Health and Hospitals Corporation
  • the New York City Sheriff's Office
  • Office of Emergency Management

How to Access CRN
City agencies can access the CRN system with the use of portable, mobile, and desktop control station devices. For large dispatching needs, agencies can access the CRN system through the use of wireless consoles that can be installed at the agency's location.

When an agency determines that it may need to leverage the CRN system, DoITT works closely with that agency's IT/MIS team to determine its exact business needs and to help design the best, most cost-effective solution to meet those needs. DoITT will continue to work with the agency through procurement and installation, ensuring that the agency is properly integrated into the CRN system.
