Out-of-School Time

Out-of-School Time Program

The Out-of-School Time (OST) Program provides a mix of academic, recreational and cultural activities for young people (grades K-12) after school, during holidays and in the summer. Programs are free of charge and are located in every neighborhood across the City.

New York City's OST programs provide:

  • Safe programs in a supportive environment
  • A schedule that meets the needs of working parents
  • Separate programs for elementary, middle school, and high school students
  • Trained staff
  • Homework help
  • Healthy snacks

OST Participants Express Themselves Through Claymation

Brooklyn Children's Museum teamed up with artist and Museum Team Educator Ernest Concepcion to provide OST participants with the opportunity to create animated skits with clay figurines.

An OST Success Story

Name: Travis
Age: 17 years old

Home: East Harlem, Manhattan

Provider: East Harlem Tutorial Program

Travis— a recent immigrant from Guyana— is a junior at the Academy of Environmental Science High School. He is also well on his way to becoming an expert on human anatomy thanks to the Science Intensive Program, which is operated by the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) in cooperation with the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Travis and his fellow OST participants meet weekly at Touro and learn about human anatomy in both the classroom and the lab, where they work on project-based activities.  The classes are taught by Touro medical students, and every week an OST participant gives a PowerPoint presentation on the previous week’s lesson.  Travis impressed everyone with an outstanding presentation on the damaging effects of drugs and alcohol.
