MAYOR BLOOMBERG JOINS YOUTH VOLUNTEERS PARTICIPATING IN THE SUMMER OF SERVICE PROGRAM
Summer of Service is part of NYC Service, Mayor Bloomberg's initiative to promote volunteerism in the Big Apple.  On Friday, July 24 and August 7, 2009 more than 1,000 Youths from the Summer Youth Employment Program gave back to their communities through service projects in all five boroughs.

Fatherhood Program Celebration
On June 13, participants in DYCD’s Fatherhood Initiative programs gathered at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum for our annual Father’s Day event.  DYCD’s Fatherhood Initiative helps non-custodial fathers actively participate in the lives of their children.  More than 170 fathers, children and guests attended.  Each father was honored with a certificate for his outstanding performance as a parent.  Commissioner Mullgrav was joined at the event by Dominic Carter from NY1 and Human Resources Administration Commissioner Robert Doar.  The fathers and their children enjoyed a day of interactive activities at one of the most exciting museums in New York City.

Several OST programs in the Rockaways gathered at Michaelis-Bayswater Park on June 4th, 2009  for the 4th annual Fun on the Rock event.  Participants started the day by decorating banners while incorporating the theme of unity.  Later they took part in potato sack races, tennis, fencing and karate lessons, basketball clinics, and face painting.

NYC’s Department of Youth and Community Development FIRST Lego League Championship
On 
June 13th, some 300 young people gathered at Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn for the FIRST Lego League Championship. Participants put the robots they designed and built to the test before a panel of judges.  The championship was the culmination of DYCD’s Robotics Initiative, a ten-week program that engages young people from 40 Out-of-School Time programs and Beacon Community Centers.
