FDNY Cuts Ribbon on New Mobile Fire Safety House

Director of the FDNY's Fire Safety Education Unit Lt. Anthony Mancuso (left), State Senator Andrew Lanza (center, with red tie) and children from P.S. 6 on Staten Island cut the ribbon that officially unveils the new fire safety Smoke House.
It’s not often you see firefighters leading children into a room full of fire hazards and smoke, but on Oct. 1, they did just that … all in the name of fire safety.
Members of the FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit and FDNY Foundation joined State Senator Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island) to unveil one of two new Smoke Houses, which will teach children how to keep their homes fire safe.
“We’re so grateful to have these new trailers,” Lt. Anthony Mancuso, Director of the Fire Safety Education Unit, said during the ceremony at P.S. 6 on Staten Island.
Senator Lanza helped lead the Senate to secure $200,000 to fund these life-saving teaching centers.

FDNY Smoke Houses are a traveling, walk-through exhibits that replicate a private home with real fire hazards. They are equipped with theatrical smoke that simulates fire conditions, teaching children fire safe practices and effective fire evacuation techniques.
“You will all be fire safety experts after you go through this,” Senator Lanza told 2nd and 3rd grade students from P.S. 6. “The things you learn today will save lives and make sure everyone stays safe.”
