FDNY Fire Safety Education Unit to Give Away Free 9-Volt Batteries
The Department urges all New Yorkers to change the batteries in their smoke alarms when they change their clocks for Daylight Saving time on Nov. 1. And to help drive home this message, teams of FDNY Fire Safety Educators will be distributing 9-volt batteries for smoke alarms beginning Oct. 30 throughout the five boroughs.
The batteries have been donated by the FDNY Foundation, the Department’s official fundraising organization.
Smoke alarms provide an early warning of a fire, allowing people sufficient time to reach safety. More than 97 percent of homes have at least one smoke alarm, but more than 33 percent of them do not work due to a missing or dead battery.
