Distance Learning on the Intranet

The Office of Fire and Life Safety contacted a number of colleges with distance learning and on-line degree programs. Distance learning enables FDNY personnel to enroll in credit bearing college courses around the clock. Access requires a personal computer linked to the internet and E-mail. Distance learning primarily serves adult students who want to advance their careers, prepare for a new career or enroll in a degree program for personal reasons. Even though distance learning currently cannot deliver some of the "hand on" learning activities required by FDNY personnel courses can enable disciplined and self-motivated students to garner the didactic and theoretical components.

FDNY distance learning Intranet Information page contains links to colleges eager to work with our 16,000 uniform and civilian employees to further their educational and professional opportunities. Employees can earn an Associate's, Bachelor's or Master's or Doctoral Degree on-line in the comfort of their own home.

Peruse the colleges listed here and investigate their distance learning capability. In time, others will be added. Further details about these institutions can be obtained from Ms. MaryElizabeth Rohan, FDNY College Advisor, at (718) 281-8464.
