‘Saints’ Luminous at Sundance

The "Made in NY" production A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints enjoyed its time in the sun at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where Dito Montiel took home the Dramatic Directing Award for the film, which also received a Special Jury Prize for best ensemble performance. The film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Rosario Dawson, tells the coming of age story of a boy growing up in Queens in the 1980’s who believes he is saved from choosing the wrong path by various saints.

Lauper On Location at Governors Island

This August, Cyndi Lauper shot a music video to accompany her new CD "The Body Acoustic," as well as still photography as artwork for the CD cover, on New York City’s Governors Island. The production used locations across the Island, including the esplanade overlooking New York Harbor, Colonels Row, interiors and exteriors of the houses at Nolan Park, and the ferry.

Hire a "Made in NY" Production Assistant!

On February 27, the first cycle of the "Made in NY" training program began preparing New Yorkers for careers as production assistants. The free, full-time, one-month program is designed to provide New Yorkers with training for entry-level positions in production, provide production assistants with access to employment opportunities, encourage diversity within the City’s entertainment production workforce, and provide an additional incentive for attracting new production to New York City.

‘Friday Night at the Movies’ at MoMA
March 1, 2006
This spring, the Friday Night at the Movies program for high school students at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will present a series of films shot in New York City, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting. The series will feature screenings of King Kong on April 7, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three on April 28, Spider-Man on May 5, Do the Right Thing on May 12, The Fisher King on May 19, and Mad Hot Ballroom on May 26.

City Enjoys "The View" Day

On February 2, Katherine Oliver, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting, presented a Mayoral proclamation declaring "The View Day" in the City of New York, in celebration of the program’s 2,000th show. In recognition of the milestone, Commissioner Oliver also joined with the hosts of The View to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Bus Shelters are ‘Funny’ for February

What does it take to find true love in the City? That’s the subject of Funny Valentine, a "Made in NY" production which released on DVD on January 24. The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting supported the release with co-branded bus shelter advertisements, as part of the "Made in NY" incentive program’s marketing credit, which leverages the City’s assets to provide free advertising on bus shelters throughout the five boroughs to qualifying productions.

NYC Full of "Hot Shots"
February 3, 2006
The New York City Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting today announced the launch of Hot Shots, an online photo library on www.nyc.gov/film which gives producers and location managers instant access to a catalogue of City-owned beaches, bridges, courthouses, highways, jails, military, police and fire facilities, parks and playgrounds, public spaces, and streets and intersections throughout the five boroughs which the City offers free of charge for production. The launch was celebrated with a reception yesterday evening attended by New York City producers and location managers.
