Many HHC facilities have been designated as official Stroke Centers by the New York State Health Department. At HHC Stroke Centers, stroke victims receive quality care and the urgent diagnosis and treatment they need to prevent disability or death often caused by stroke. With this designation, ambulances are directed to bring patients with stroke-like symptoms directly to a Stroke Center, if they are located within 20 minutes of one.

Strokes are caused by a blood clot in the brain. If a stroke victim gets to the hospital within three hours from the onset of stroke symptoms, a “clot-busting” drug may be able to undo the clot’s damage. The signs and symptoms of stroke include sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body, confusion or difficulty speaking or understanding, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or a severe unexplained headache. HHC Stroke Centers of Excellence have dedicated stroke teams of specially trained health care workers who provide 24/7 access. Patients undergo rapid testing, analysis and treatment, providing the best chance for complete recovery.
