WTC Environmental Health Center
People with health symptoms related to 9/11 can get medical treatment at the HHC WTC Environmental Health Center.

Ever since the attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC), there have been concerns about the health consequences of exposures to those who were involved in the rescue and recovery response as well as those who lived, worked, volunteered or attended school close to the site.

Approximately 1 million tons of dust was released into the air from the attacks and subsequent collapse of the WTC. The dust contained asbestos and other carcinogens as well as concrete, glass fibers and lead. Over the years, studies have found a number of health issues that may be related to exposures to WTC dusts.

Press Release Announcing Center Expansion

The WTC Environmental Health Center at Bellevue Hospital, Gouverneur Health Services in Lower Manhattan and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, offer treatment to people who have health problems as a result of 9/11.  It was formally established at Bellevue in 2006, however Bellevue has been treating affected patients since 2002. Elmhurst Hospital has also had a program organized to treat those experiencing health problems as a result of exposure to dust and smoke from the WTC attack. Gouverneur has most recently begun to put in place medical capacity to treat individuals affected by 9/11 related health conditions. Under a single clinical and administrative structure, the three sites of the Center of Excellence will continue to increase treatment capacity and develop uniform operating procedures over the next several months.

The Center works in partnership with community organizations and residents affected by 9/11.  Treatment is available to all regardless of ability to pay, insurance or immigration status.  Patients who don’t speak English can receive assistance in their native language.
