The WTC Environmental Health Center at Bellevue Hospital, Gouverneur Health Services in Lower Manhattan and Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, offer treatment to people who have health problems as a result of 9/11. It was formally established at Bellevue in 2006, however Bellevue has been treating affected patients since 2002. Elmhurst Hospital has also had a program organized to treat those experiencing health problems as a result of exposure to dust and smoke from the WTC attack. Gouverneur has most recently begun to put in place medical capacity to treat individuals affected by 9/11 related health conditions. Under a single clinical and administrative structure, the three sites of the Center of Excellence will continue to increase treatment capacity and develop uniform operating procedures over the next several months.
The Center works in partnership with community organizations and residents affected by 9/11. Treatment is available to all regardless of ability to pay, insurance or immigration status. Patients who don’t speak English can receive assistance in their native language.
