HIV Testing

HIV/AIDS is still an epidemic in New York City. It is estimated that 100,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed with HIV or AIDS, and there were roughly 1,500 AIDS-related deaths last year, with 85 percent of them among African-American and Hispanic New Yorkers. More than 20,000 New Yorkers living with HIV or AIDS are over the age of 50, and one-third of the new diagnoses annually are among women. HIV is the third leading cause of death below age 65 in New York City.

Because an estimated 25,000 New Yorkers are infected by the virus but don't know it, HHC is increasingly making HIV testing part of routine patient care across all settings - in our emergency rooms, our outpatient clinics and our inpatient units. In Fiscal Year 2008, HHC facilities provided 160,900 HIV tests - more than two and a half times greater than the number tested just three years previously -- and identified 1,863 patients who tested positive. As a result, we have gotten many more individuals into early treatment and have helped to reduce the transmission rate even as we lessen the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

Below you will see the number of HIV tests provided to HHC from Fiscal Year 2005 through Fiscal Year 2008.
