The Department for the Aging

The Department for the Aging (DFTA) provides a comprehensive online listing of senior housing operating within the five boroughs. The information can be viewed by borough or by entering a zip code for the desired area.

Affordable senior housing can have lengthy waiting lists. The Department for the Aging encourages seniors to consider all choices when looking for housing by utilizing information from other City agencies at this site as well as reviewing information available from the Federal government (HUD) at: HUD.gov and the NYS Division of Housing and Community Renewal (DHCR) Web site at: www.dhcr.state.ny.us.

The City has a number of programs to assist low-income homeowners and renters with housing costs. Some of these programs are specifically for seniors. The programs fall under various categories:

People with disabilities are encouraged to enter as many of the standard City housing lotteries as they are eligible for. People with disabilities should note that often housing lotteries offer preferences for people with mobility and/or vision impairments.

Medicaid eligible clients seeking personal care services (i.e., home attendant, housekeeping) may find services through Home Care Services Program (HCSP) Community Alternative Systems Agency (CASA) Offices.

The Department of Finance offers an exemption from future rent increases to people currently living in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized apartments who have a disability. A property tax reduction is available to homeowners who have a disability (called the Disabled Homeowners' Exemption, or DHE). Owners of one-, two-, and three-family houses, cooperative apartments, and condominiums may be eligible, if the owner uses the property as his or her primary residence. There is also a Disabled Crime Victim/Good Samaritan Exemption for people with disabilities that were the result of being a crime victim or helping a crime victim.
