New
York has always been the center of urban music. Salsa was born in New York not
only because we have the most diverse Latino population in the world, but also
because it is here where the Latino community meets the other two-thirds of all
New Yorkers.
The wonderful diverse Latino population of New York brings together talent
in a mix of cultures, beats, music, traditions, and customs. We're creating
a new genre of film, theater, music, and major events that support the arts
in Latin New York.
Born and raised in New York City, I had the opportunity to be part of the cultural
and music scene of the 60's and 70's. The Latin New York's music scene flourished,
and I’m especially proud of the new Latin renaissance in the city.
I have worked with Mayor Bloomberg since 2002 to bring more Latino tourism
by supporting and promoting our Latino culture. As we discussed various possible
projects, Mayor Bloomberg decided that these plans merited a Latin Media and
Entertainment Commission to support and advance Latin arts and culture. We have
the best and brightest from the media, business, and not-for-profit community.
Thank you, Mayor Bloomberg, for creating the country's first Latin Commission.
