Autistic, and on the Airwaves
The participants at Lifestyles for the Disabled do not exactly seem like naturals as radio personalities.

There is Anthony Cossentino, 29, a huge “Jeopardy” fan who for years has been arriving at Lifestyles, a daytime occupational program on Staten Island for developmentally delayed adults in their 20s and 30s, every morning with a self-written question of the day, to pose to anyone who will listen.

Or take Michael Halbreich, 32, who has an uncanny ability to remember the birthday of anyone he meets, and to instantly name the day of the week that any date in history fell on.

The Real Sounds Of Hearing Loss
by AUDREY CARLSEN
Mike Agliolo/Science SourceIt's easy enough to restore 20/20 eyesight with glasses or contacts. But even state-of-the-art digital hearing aids can't perfectly restore hearing for people whose inner ears have been damaged by noise exposure, medications or just the wear and tear of aging.

Part of the problem is that this kind of sensorineural hearing loss — the result of permanent damage to the sensory cells of the inner ear — does more than just make sounds quieter. It can jumble the sounds, too, in ways that garble speech.

Help us help our life-sustaining equipment customers
Con Edison is one of the world's most reliable electric utilities, but we occasionally experience unavoidable power problems due to severe weather or unexpected equipment failure.

To protect our customers with special electrical needs, we must know about every person who uses life-sustaining equipment (LSE) in the five boroughs and Westchester, even if they do not have a Con Edison account.

As a healthcare provider or equipment distributor, we need your help to make sure our LSE customers are well prepared in the event of an electrical power outage. Click here for more information.

Please share this information with your personnel who may come into contact with patients or clients who use electrical LSE, and/or with your customers who purchase or rent such equipment.

In case of an emergency, LSE users should:

  • always have an alternate source of electric power, such as a battery backup system
  • make sure generators are properly adjusted and used in a well ventilated area
  • have an emergency plan, including telephone numbers for police, fire, or ambulance service
  • have a phone that works when the power is off, such as a corded landline or a fully charged cell phone

Thank you for your attention and cooperation. If you have any suggestions about how we can ensure the safety and well-being of people with special needs, please call us at 1-800-293-5680.

Taxi Smart Card Program
The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities and the NYC Department for the Aging are pleased to announce the Taxi Smart Card Program is currently underway and accepting applications. The Taxi Smart Card Program offers disabled residents of Brooklyn’s Community District 18 and Queens’ Community District 1 the opportunity to apply for the use of pre-loaded debit cards that can be used to pay for yellow taxicabs and livery car services.

Participants can use the Taxi Smart Card to take taxis to doctor’s appointments, visit relatives and/or friends, use taxis for transport to supermarkets or shopping centers, etc.  The Taxi Smart Card Program will be a wonderful resource for coverage during off- peak periods, nights, weekends and for trips that don’t fit into regular NYC MTA transit or Access-A-Ride routes.

For more information, please contact Stephanie Myers at the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.
