Food Stamps is a Federal program run by state and local agencies; in New York City the Human Resource Administration is the responsible agency. People who qualify for SSI and Public Assistance may also be enaltd to Food Stamps, which are coupons used as cash to buy food. The amount available depends on the size of the family, and the total income of all family members.

Food Stamps are designed to enable people with limited income to increase their purchasing power. Food Stamps are used in place of cash to purchase food items at participating grocery stores and supermarkets. The Program is federally funded under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

You do not need to be destitute to qualify for food stamps. For qualification guidelines and an application call the HRA Infoline at Voice 1 (718 472-8411, (TTY) (718) 262-3566; or go to one of the twenty (20) Food Stamp Offices located throughout New York City.
