The 2009 Nonprofit Economic Climate: Managing through the Downturn

In December 2008, Fiscal Management Associates and the Nonprofit Finance Fund joined together to present a workshop that offered nonprofit leaders concrete tools to lead their organizations during this challenging time. Topics include the effects of the current market environment on nonprofits, developing strategic responses through scenario planning and modeling, recognizing opportunities, revenue and expense considerations, cash flow and credit management and the role of the Executive Director and Board leadership. The sponsors of the event, The Clark, Robin Hood, and Tiger foundations, have agreed to offer the tools and presentation for public download.

Good Governance Guide

Governance Matters developed the Good Governance Guide to help nonprofit board members and executives assess their own organization and improve board performance to further the nonprofit mission. The areas and questions regarding good governance practices are available online or the guide can be printed.

Board Development: Oversight and Effective Governance

A strong board of directors provides a vision for the executive director and staff of a nonprofit organization, engages stakeholders to support that vision, and exercises key oversight responsibilities, including fiscal oversight as fiduciaries of the organization. To fulfill all three roles successfully, an effective board requires a diversity of skills and an appropriate structure. This training provides information and tools for the board of a growing organization.

Auditing Procedures for Nonprofits

An organization's ability to meet expected accounting requirements is critical to contracting with NYC. The City contracting agency requires that City funds are spent on authorized expenses, and this is confirmed through an audit of the vendor's books and records. These presentations will demonstrate how organizations can successfully prepare for and then navigate the auditing process—independent audits, scheduled audits, fiscal field reviews, and corrective action plans.

New IRS Tax Form 990

Effective as of the 2008 tax year, Form 990 has been redesigned with major changes in reporting requirements. The new form consists of an 11-page, 11-part core form that will be required from all organizations with revenues over $25,000 in a given fiscal year. Some information previously required of Form 990 (2007) has been eliminated or revised; meanwhile the new form requires information not previously reported. This presentation highlights major changes in the new Form 990, such as: governance and compensation of officers, determination of public charity status and public support, and the new schedules.
