| Family
lore has it that my great-grandfather, Will Stoothoff, was Manhattan's
first mounted policeman. He and his wife, Phebe Emma Oakley,
had two children: William Woodruff Stoothoff, Jr. (my grandfather)
and Laura.
One of the first Stoothoffs, born around
1620, came to New York from Holland. His descendents owned
an island off the coast for awhile. For over 300 years, this
family apparently lived in and around New York City.
Here in the central states and elsewhere,
many of us would like to search your city for our own history
as well as yours. Keep your past alive, develop New York,
and continue to hold the interest of the rest of the nation.
