Shopping Tips > Grocery Store

Cereals and Dry Foods

Many markets in New York City offer bulk dispensers for cereal, flour, coffee, candy, nuts, dried fruits, and other items. Where stores allow, fill your own containers and eliminate all packaging waste associated with the purchase. If your grocery or market doesn’t offer this option, consider other opportunities to minimize waste when shopping for food.

Eliminate single-serve containers where possible. Single-serve packaging is among the most wasteful and most expensive packaging in the market. Breakfast cereal can be purchased in a recyclable paperboard box instead of shrink-wrapped single-serve packets or boxes.

Purchase the economy-size product when it makes sense for your family. Buying a large bag of rice and adding your own seasonings as you cook eliminates excess packaging and saves money.

Select products in recyclable packaging. Paperboard boxes are preferable to laminated foil pouches or plastic bags.
