Cheese

Purchase bulk cheese wedges or sliced cheese from the deli counter — this is often less expensive and creates less waste than buying individually wrapped slices or sticks of cheese.

Eggs

Avoid buying eggs packaged in Styrofoam cartons or in rigid plastic clamshells, neither of which are recyclable in New York City. The best choice is a recyclable paperboard egg carton.

Compost egg shells in your compost bin.  See food and yard waste in our virtual home tour for more information.

Milk

Recycle your milk containers. Glass bottles, plastic bottles and jugs, gable-top cartons, and drink boxes are recyclable in New York City.

Yogurt

Purchase yogurt in the largest possible container. Selecting a 32-oz. container is less wasteful and often less costly than choosing several smaller 8-oz. or 4-oz. individual serving containers. Pack yogurt for lunches in a reusable container that you bring home, wash, and use again.
