Shopping Tips > Grocery Store

Produce

There are a number of ways you can reduce waste when purchasing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Consider the following tips:

Try to purchase loose fruits and vegetables to reduce packaging waste.

Inform the produce manager at your local supermarket that you prefer to buy produce without packaging. Many are surprised to learn their customers' preference, and eliminating the trays and wrap saves the store money and labor.

Save and reuse the plastic bags provided in the produce department for future shopping trips.

Remember to compost vegetable and fruit scraps. Flowers and plants can also be composted. See food and yard waste in tips for your home for more information.
