NYC Recycling Statistics

Want to know how well your neighborhood is recycling compared to the rest of the City? Follow the instructions below to find information on New York City's residential recycling diversion rate. (Information is presented for the previous fiscal year.)

The diversion rate represents the portion of total discarded materials collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) that is diverted from disposal through recycling. It is calculated by dividing the weight of DSNY collected recyclables by the weight of DSNY collected refuse and recyclables.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ACCESSING DIVERSION RATE INFO

STEP 1: Go to NYCityMap and enter the information requested for search type, address number, street name, and borough. Then select Find.
STEP 2: First select Show Additional Information, then Neighborhood Information, and then My Neighborhood Statistics.
STEP 3:   Choose the tab for Infrastructure, Administrative and Community Services. Diversion rate information is labeled as Curbside and Containerized Recycling Diversion Rate. NOTES: Citywide diversion rate information is presented for the previous fiscal year (which runs from July 1 through June 30).

Community board diversion rate (based upon the address entered in Step 1 above) appears next to the citywide figure.

Clicking on the pdf file under Map opens a map of citywide diversion. The map shows fiscal year diversion rate by community board for the whole city.
