The first step an individual takes towards becoming a police officer is to
take a written Civil Service examination. The Department of Citywide
Administrative Services (DCAS) administers these exams. DCAS is responsible for
the actual administration of the exam as well as the compilation of the list of
names of individuals who pass the exam. DCAS then provides the New York City
Police Department with the list of eligible's. The Applicant Processing Division
then begins the selection process.
The Applicant Processing Division
The primary function of the Applicant Processing Division is to select the most qualified police officer, traffic enforcement agent and school safety candidates for a challenging career in the New York City Police Department. It is the responsibility of each applicant investigator to ensure that pertinent aspects of every candidate's history have been thoroughly reviewed. The command's major accomplishment is the processing of approximately 205,000 candidates for the position of police officer within the last five years, of which 15,600 were hired.
For date and time on any upcoming Career Seminars, contact the Candidate Relations Section, (718) 972-3120 from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm
