New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly
will host the opening the Department's new Mounted Unit Headquarters on Tuesday,
September 30, at 11 a.m. at Pier 63 in Manhattan. The new facility is located
off the West Side Highway at West 23rd Street.
For more than 20 years,
the Mounted Unit has maintained its headquarters on West 42nd Street. The new
space, however, offers more space and amenities, including 25 Box Stalls to
house the Department horses, as well as an indoor coral. The facility's new
location is also more convenient to many Midtown events, including the 2004
Republican Convention, during which the Mounted Unit will be performing a
majority of its duties in the Madison Square Garden area. In addition to the
official opening ceremony, the Mounted Unit is naming eight police horses in
memory of officers who were killed in the line of duty.
