Services for Disabled Clients
Disabled people are especially vulnerable to abuse in the home. Clients with disabilities may receive a range of services at the New York City Family Justice Centers.

  • The Centers are wheelchair accessible.
  • Clients may meet with staff from Barrier Free Living, an FJC partner that provides counseling, advocacy and skills-building for disabled domestic violence victims.
  • Barrier Free Living advocates can assist victims seeking shelter at Freedom House, the City’s first domestic violence shelter designed for people with disabilities.
  • Clients may also receive legal information from the Barrier Free Justice Program at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office in the New York City Family Justice Center in Brooklyn which specializes in assisting disabled and abused clients.

Elder Abuse Services
Staff from New York City’s Department for the Aging as well as social workers and attorneys from the Jewish Association for Services for the Aged, both on-site FJC partners, are available to help any client over age 60. Both work with prosecutors specializing in elder abuse, and provide emergency counseling, direct services, and information about community services for the elderly.

Services for Teenage Clients
Community based providers at the FJC specialize in assisting teenagers with advocacy, counseling, and legal issues such as orders of protection. The Kings County District Attorney’s Office works through the Youthful Offender Domestic Violence Court to facilitate services for both victims and teenage abusers.

Services for Immigrant Clients
The Centers have partner organizations with staff members who speak more than 20 languages between the two sites. In addition, Language Line interpretation services in over 150 languages are available at the Centers. Clients may file a police report and obtain legal assistance, therapeutic counseling, and other support services in their own language from culturally sensitive service providers at the FJC.

It is the policy of the New York City Police Department not to inquire about the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses, or others who call or approach the police seeking assistance.
