Winter Weather Weekend
Another Weekend of Winter Weather
New Yorkers can expect yet another wintry mix this weekend, with the heaviest snowfall coming late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for New York City from 11 AM on Saturday, January 10, until 8 AM on Sunday, January 11. Drivers and pedestrians should exercise caution as roads may be slick and visibility may be poor.

OEM Tip of the Week

OEM Tip of the Week: Give Blood, Save Lives

Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather, and illness. America's blood centers and the American Red Cross host National Blood Donor Month in January to help increase reserves.

If you are at least 17 and you weigh more than 110 pounds, you could save up to three lives by donating blood.

Learn About Safe Home Heating

Every New York City resident is entitled to heat and hot water, but that does not mean systems do not break down. If you lose heat, contact your superintendent or building manager or owner. Be sure to heat your home safely while they work to restore heat.

  • Never heat your home with a stove.
  • Use only portable heating equipment that is approved for indoor use.
  • Keep combustible materials, including furniture, drapes, and carpeting at least three feet away from the heat source. NEVER drape clothes over a space heater to dry.

Contact 311 if heat is not restored.

Ready New York For Kids

Ready New York for Kids Launches in Brooklyn

On December 5, OEM and the Department of Education introduced a pilot program to educate New York City public school students about the importance of emergency preparedness. The program will run in 46 schools in Brooklyn's school district 13, after which the initiative will expand to other schools throughout the city. Ready New York for Kids uses classroom activities so kids can have fun while they think critically about being safe.
