The Long Term Planning and Sustainability Office coordinates and oversees efforts to develop and implement a strategic vision for the City's future working with City agencies and the Mayor's Advisory Board for Sustainability.
On December 12, 2006, Mayor Bloomberg challenged all New Yorkers to take part in a conversation about how to transform New York City into a sustainable city by 2040 - an effort called PlaNYC. In his speech, the Mayor outlined ten goals to make New York City a healthier, more reliable and sustainable place -- not only for us, but for generations to come. He has asked New Yorkers for their ideas to achieve these goals.
There are three major challenges ahead. By 2030, our City will add nearly one million more people, a population roughly the size of San Francisco. We'll be relying on infrastructure networks built nearly a century ago. And we will face an increasingly unpredictable and volatile environment. If we act now, we have an opportunity not only to sustain our recent success - but to make our city even stronger in the years ahead.
