Since the program began in March 2004, Workforce1 has placed men and women in banks all around the city. "It takes a lot of discipline and hunger," said Jose Castro, Operations Manager at a midtown branch of HSBC. "Workforce1 program graduates come in with a great foundation and a solid understanding of the banking world," Castro noted enthusiastically.
Pablo Acosta is a perfect example. He graduated from the Bank Teller Training Program at the Upper Manhattan Workforce1 Career Center, and has been working at the Houston Street Branch of HSBC for more than 6 months.
It was a career shift for him. Pablo, along with many of his co-workers, lost his job as an information specialist shortly after September 11, 2001. Although he has a college degree, finding suitable work was tough. He landed in the retail industry and worked his way up to Manager, but knew it wasn’t right for him. Pablo turned to the Upper Manhattan Workforce1 Career Center for help.
One of the Workforce1 Career Center’s career counselors spotted Pablo’s bank teller potential during an in-depth interview and asked if he’d be interested. He said yes, took the test to screen for program eligibility and signed up, seeing the banking industry as an opportunity to apply his education in Business and Economics.
After the intensive 3-week, full-day Bank Teller Training Program, Pablo was completely familiar with the necessary skills, including security, money handling, customer service, and technology to succeed in the banking industry.
Workforce1 set up interviews with three large banks and Pablo settled on HSBC, drawn by the Management Training Program and the career advancement pathways available there. Pablo loves his job, saying "I don’t mind starting as a teller, because when I’m a manager, I’ll be able to better relate to my staff. I’ll know where they’re coming from."
