The 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup returned to Giants Stadium as the top soccer players from North and Central America represented their countries in the tournament’s first round games. In the opening day’s matches, Mexico defeated Cuba 2-1 and Panama defeated Honduras 3-2. On day two, Honduras shocked Mexico 2-1 on Carlos Costy’s goal in the final minute of play, his second goal of the game. Cuba and Panama played to a 2-2 tie after Panamanian captain Philippe Baloy failed to convert a penalty kick in the 90th minute. Honduras claimed first place in the group and advanced to the quarterfinals along with Mexico and Panama.
CONCACAF is the governing body that organizes tournaments and structures competition for over 40 member nations. The CONCACAF Gold Cup takes place every two years. The U.S. team won the inaugural Cup in 1991 by defeating Honduras at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
