2004 NYC Grand Prix of Fencing
Over 400 of the world’s top fencers squared off at the 2004 NYC Grand Prix of Fencing from June 10-13 at Hunter College and the Roosevelt Grand Ballroom. The fencers traveled from over 20 countries and competed in various individual and team competitions that included Men’s and Women’s Saber and Women’s Foil. The United States made a strong showing, winning the gold in the Men’s Saber Team competition and capturing the silver in the 2004 Women’s Saber Team World Championships.
Russia proved their saber dominance by winning gold medals in both the Men’s and Women’s Saber Individual competitions. Stanislav Pozdniakov finished on top of the Men’s bracket, while countrymate Elena Netchaeva did the same on the Women’s side. The United States’ Ivan Lee took the bronze medal in the Men’s Saber Individual competition while Keeth Smart, the first African-American to be ranked #1 in the world in men’s saber, finished 25th. The United States was also well represented in both women’s solo competitions, as Sada Jacobson and Iris Zimmerman captured bronze medals in the Women’s Saber and Foil competitions, respectively. Erinn Smart, the 2004 U.S. National Champion in foil discipline, finished 27th.
