Heisman Trophy

74th Heisman Memorial Trophy

Announcement: Saturday, December 13, 2008
Nokia Theater, Times Square
Presentation: Monday, December 15, 2008
New York Hilton - Grand Ballroom
The Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to a player deemed the most outstanding college football player in the United States. One of the most recognized trophies in all of sports, the Heisman represents excellence and achievement both on and off the football field.

Quarterbacks dominate the mid-season list of candidates to win the 2008 Heisman Trophy. Heading into the season, University of Florida’s Tim Tebow was a favorite to win the award in back to back years, a feat accomplished only by running back Archie Griffin more than three decades ago. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy is emerging as an early front runner, while Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is expected to challenge as well. Quarterbacks Chase Daniel (Missouri) and Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) are possible contenders as well. Also in the contention will be Michigan State running back Javon Ringer.

First awarded in 1935 to Jay Berwanger of Chicago University, 73 others have been honored as the nation’s best. Notables have included Roger Staubach (Navy, 1963), Archie Griffin (Ohio State, 1974 & 1975), Marcus Allen (USC, 1981), Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988) and Carson Palmer (USC, 2002). Last year, Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow became the first sophomore to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
