The 2008 Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament Presented by Forest City Ratner, the largest wheelchair basketball event of its kind in the Northeast, featured 13 of the top teams from across the US and Canada. The LA Lakers captured the Mayor’s Cup Division II title and the Twin City Spinners (Ontario, Canada) won the Division III championship.
The Lakers, led by Div. II Tournament MVP William Arriaga’s 21 point and 10 rebound effort, defeated the New York Rollin’ Knicks 77-54 in the finals to take home the Division II title. Div. II All-Tournament team selection Eddie McGee (Lakers) added 16 points and 12 rebounds in a game that was well in hand by halftime. Div. II All-Tournament selection Eddie Lopez scored 19 points and grabbed eight boards and Kevin Grant poured in a game-high 22 points in the losing effort for the Knicks. The Lakers were clearly in a class by themselves as they did not lose a game in the tournament and posted an impressive 22.4 point margin of victory.
In the Div. III championship game, the Twin City Spinners overwhelmed the Connecticut Spokebenders 46-21 to claim the Mayor’s Cup. Div. III Tournament MVP Kris Dutkiewicz scored 11 points and snatched eight rebounds and John Burns added a game-high 12 points to lead the Spinners to their first Mayor’s Cup title since 2005. Div III All-Tournament team member Josh Levine scored five points and pulled down six rebounds from the Spokebenders.
In addition, Steve Stolberg (Bay State Clippers) and Steven Davis (NEPVA Celtics) were named to the Div. III All-Tournament team for their outstanding play over the course of the tournament.
This year's impressive field included a women's team--the Lady Liberty--for the first time since the tournament's inception in 2001. The New York Metropolitan Area was represented by several local clubs including the division II Bulova Nets (Bronx), the division III Nets (NJ, Queens), the New York Rollin' Knicks (Manhattan, Brooklyn), the Nassau Kings (Long Island) and the Suffolk County Cobras (Long Island). The Rochester Wheels (NY), Twin City Spinners (Canada), LA Lakers (CA), Connecticut Spokebenders, Cleveland Cavaliers (OH), Bay State Clippers (MA) and NEVPA Celtics (MA) rounded-out the bracket.
Wheelchair basketball is played on a regulation basketball court, but players may only push their wheelchair twice before dribbling or passing. The height of the basket is the standard 10 feet used in both college and professional basketball. Athletes opt for specially designed wheelchairs engineered for speed and maneuverability.
The New York City Sports Commission created the Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in 2001 in an effort to enhance the scope of adaptive sports in New York City. This NWBA-sanctioned tournament has been held annually ever since and has become the largest wheelchair basketball tournament in the Northeast. The City also sponsors Mayor’s Cup tournaments in a variety of other sports including: field hockey, billiards, handball, baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, kayaking, track & field, cross country, chess, table tennis and wrestling. This event would also not be possible without the support of Forest City Ratner Companies and the Louise and Arde Bulova Fund.
