US OPEN 2008

The 2008 US Open:

Dates: August 25-September 7, 2008
Place: USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

Switzerland’s Roger Federer became the first player in the Open Era to win five consecutive US Open titles by defeating Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 in the men’s final. With the victory, Federer now boasts 13 Grand Slam titles in his career. American Serena Williams took home her third US Open crown, defeating Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 7-5 en route to earning her ninth Grand Slam title.

Federer’s 13th Grand Slam victory puts him within one major championship of tying Pete Sampras' career record of 14. He also became the first man since Bill Tilden in 1924 to win five consecutive US Open Titles and the only player in tennis history to win five successive titles in two different Grand Slam events (Wimbledon and the US Open).

Williams’ straight-set victory over Jankovic capped off an impressive showing at the Open where she did not drop a single set. In addition to marking Williams’ third US Open title and ninth Grand Slam, the victory earned Williams the world No. 1 ranking. Williams’ last Open title came six years ago when she defeated her sister Venus 6-4, 6-3 in the 2002 US Open.

Americans Bob and Mike Bryan won the US Open doubles title by defeating Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic and Leander Paes of Indonesia, 7-6 (7-5) and 7-6 (12-10) in the men's doubles final. Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Liezel Huber of the USA won the women's doubles title, defeating Lisa Raymond of the USA and Australian Samantha Stosur 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

Americans have won 19 of 40 US Open titles since professionals were admitted in 1968 (the start of tennis's Open Era). Andy Roddick is the last American man to have captured a Grand Slam singles title (2003 US Open).

The US Open has redefined the sports landscape of New York City as one of its premier annual events. With its ability to drive tourism and spending during the two-week period in August and September, the US Open has the greatest economic impact of any sporting event hosted in New York City.
