Amos Masondo, Mayor of Johannesburg
In November 2001 Amos Masondo was elected Executive Mayor for Greater Johannesburg. Mayor Masondo has extensive and impeccable credentials as a political activist and an astute politician. He first joined the South African Student Movement in 1972 and later the Soweto in 1974. His participation in the Soweto underground movement led to his imprisonment on Robben Island from 1975 until 1981. In 1983 he was a founder of the United Democratic Front, a non-racial and an all-inclusive, anti-apartheid front supported by a wide range of political, social, and religious backgrounds. Mayor Masondo has been involved in the new South African dispensation since 1994.
