In February 1980, then Mayor Edward I. Koch visited Beijing, the People’s Republic of China to sign a Sister City Agreement with the historic capital of the world’s largest nation. The purpose of forming this relationship was to promote the friendly cooperation between these two cities through people-to-people, (and sometimes, panda) exchanges from all walks of life – municipal services, culture, educational, athletics, and commerce. Therefore, on February 25, 1980, an inter-city Friendship relationship between Beijing and New York City was established. The Agreement was signed by Mayor Edward I. Koch and the Mayor of Beijing, and states “Pursuant to the basic principles laid down in the Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and the United States of American, the Beijing Municipality of the People’s Republic of China and the City of New York of the United States of America have decided to establish inter-city friendly relations so as to promote better understanding and amity between the peoples of both cities and countries.” The Beijing-New York Sister City Relationship was re-activated in October 2003 with the appointment of Ms. Geraldine Kunstadter as Chair.
