July 6
U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Mr. Daniel Kurtzer, and Sister City official Melissa Draper, met with Governor Shehata in Cairo to discuss areas of interest for future projects. They also presented Governor Shehata with a Proclamation signed by Mayor Giuliani, reaffirming the 18 years of friendship and Sister City Partnership.

First Lady of Egypt, Mrs. Mubarak, addresses the United Nations in New York and acknowledged the Sister City Program. In her address, she suggested a senior administrative exchange between museums in Cairo and New York.

1999
The Sister Cities Program of the City of New York worked with Cairo to restructure the New York-Cairo Advisory Committee.

Also in 1999, the SCP assisted in refurbishing of the New York City Garden in Cairo. It also obtained computers through the "Technology for Students" project to be donated to elementary schools in the city of Cairo and Tura, on the outskirts of Cairo.

Later in the year, Cairo recognized the renovation of an elementary school in Tura with a dedication plaque to the Sister Cities Program of the City of New York, who assisted in the renovation.
