October 2000:
Mayor José María Álverez of Madrid and New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani signed a proclamation to reaffirm the Madrid-New York City Partnership.

May 2000:
A feasibility study was undertaken to review New York City's successful Silicon Alley project and make recommendations to establish a Silicon Alley in Madrid.

March 2000:
Linda Gras, Deputy Commissioner for the NYC Division of International Business, while in Madrid and on behalf of the Sister City Program, met with Deputy Mayor of Madrid, Juan Angulo and Ms. Maria Teresa Aranguren Garrido, Attache to the Department of International Relations, to discuss future program exchanges.

Prior to 1999
"Madrid Week in New York/New York Week in Madrid" celebrated each city's history and culture. The program was an annual event that included museum art exchanges, Spanish and American history lectures, student music and dance performances, a New York photo exhibition, and a Spanish festival in Central Park.
